The continuous rise in petrol and diesel prices over the past several days has started affecting the daily financial calculations of common citizens, leading to a noticeable increase in the use of public transport services in Nagpur. Amid intense summer heat and rising fuel costs, many commuters are now preferring Nagpur Metro and Aapli Bus services for daily travel.
According to reports, fuel prices have increased by nearly Rs 7 over the last 10 days, making travel by private vehicles more expensive for middle-class families and office-goers. To reduce fuel expenses and avoid traffic-related stress, citizens are increasingly shifting towards safer, affordable, and air-conditioned public transport options.
The impact is clearly visible in Metro ridership figures. Before May 10, the average daily passenger count in Nagpur Metro ranged between 12,000 and 15,000 commuters. However, after the recent rise in temperatures and fuel prices, the daily ridership has crossed 20,000 passengers on several days. Similarly, the city’s Aapli Bus service is witnessing more than 1.6 lakh passengers every day.
Officials and commuters say that the severe heatwave conditions in Nagpur have also played a major role in this shift. Travelling on two-wheelers during peak afternoon hours has become difficult due to extreme temperatures, encouraging more people to opt for public transportation.
Despite summer vacations in schools and colleges, the passenger numbers for Metro and city buses have not declined significantly. Citizens travelling for office work, shopping, and other daily activities are continuing to rely heavily on Metro and bus services due to their affordability, convenience, and comfort.
With fuel prices and temperatures both remaining high, public transport usage in Nagpur is expected to continue increasing in the coming weeks.
