As summer temperatures continue to rise, air coolers have become an essential household appliance across the region. However, even a minor technical fault or moment of negligence can lead to fatal accidents.
Highlighting this danger, a tragic incident recently took place on Kharbi Road, where an electronics engineer lost his life after suffering an electric shock while refilling water in a running cooler.
In view of such incidents and to promote electrical safety during the summer season, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has issued important safety guidelines for citizens.
According to MSEDCL, proper household earthing is the most crucial safety measure. If a cooler develops an internal fault and the building lacks an effective earthing system, the electric current can pass through the iron body of the appliance. Touching the cooler with wet hands or while barefoot may then result in a severe or even fatal electric shock.
To ensure safe use of air coolers, consumers are advised to follow these precautions:
- Switch off before refilling: Always turn off the main power supply and unplug the cooler completely before adding water. Never refill water while the cooler is operating.
- Buy certified products: Purchase only high-quality coolers with a certified ISI mark.
- Conduct pre-season checks: Before using the cooler for the first time each season, get both the appliance and household earthing inspected by a licensed electrician.
- Avoid wet contact: Never touch electrical switches, plugs, or the cooler body with wet hands or feet.
- Exercise extra caution: Housewives and children should maintain a safe distance from iron meshes and electrical components.
- Use dedicated sockets: Connect the cooler to a separate power socket instead of overloading a single outlet with multiple high-power appliances.
- Repair faults immediately: Damaged wires, loose connections, or unusual motor noises should be attended to without delay.
MSEDCL also advised citizens on what to do in case of an electrical accident. Bystanders should never touch the victim directly. The main power supply must be switched off immediately, and the person should be separated from the source of electricity using a dry wooden stick or a plastic object before medical help is sought.
For round-the-clock assistance or to report electrical hazards, citizens can contact MSEDCL’s 24-hour toll-free helpline numbers: 1912, 19120, 1800-212-3435, or 1800-233.
