Citizens in Nagpur continue to suffer under the intense heat of ‘Nautapa’ — considered the nine hottest days of summer — as the severe heatwave maintains its grip across the district.
After 10 suspected heatstroke deaths were reported on Wednesday, five more fatalities were recorded on Thursday, marking the second consecutive day of heat-related deaths. The deceased reportedly include two residents from the city and three individuals from rural areas.
Although the sky remained overcast throughout Thursday morning, raising hopes of relief, high humidity levels made conditions even more uncomfortable. Despite the cloud cover, the temperature rose by 0.7 degrees Celsius, touching a scorching 46.4°C.
The ongoing heatwave is severely affecting public health, with prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures proving dangerous, especially for vulnerable groups.
On Wednesday alone, 10 people — including three train passengers and several homeless individuals — reportedly died due to heat-related causes. Within the following 24 hours, five additional deaths were reported.
In one incident, an unidentified man aged between 40 and 45 years was found unconscious under a bridge on Rambhaji Marg within the jurisdiction of Tehsil police station at around 8:45 am on Thursday. He was rushed to Mayo Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
In another case, an unidentified man was found dead on the first floor of a partially constructed building belonging to Maa Sharda Co-operative Society near Parshuram Chowk in Bhilgaon, under Yashodhara Nagar police station limits.
