A severe water crisis has surfaced in Besa and several rapidly expanding localities of Nagpur, with residents facing irregular and insufficient water supply amid rising summer temperatures. The growing problem is being linked to rapid population growth and unplanned urban expansion, which have placed increasing pressure on the city’s ageing water infrastructure.
Over the past few years, Besa has evolved from a relatively small residential area into one of Nagpur’s major urban growth corridors. However, infrastructure development has failed to keep pace with the surge in population and housing projects. Residents from Hudkeshwar, Mhalgi Nagar, Manewada, Besa, Beltarodi, Ayodhya Nagar and Narsala have repeatedly reported disruptions in daily water supply and inadequate distribution.
With temperatures continuing to soar, many households are experiencing dry taps for long hours, forcing families to depend on private water tankers for their daily needs. The additional expense has increased the financial burden on residents already dealing with rising household costs.
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s Water Works Department has acknowledged the disruptions, attributing part of the problem to recurring power failures at pumping stations located in Hudkeshwar, Besa and Ayodhya Nagar, which have affected water distribution in several areas.
However, residents and urban planning experts argue that the crisis is not merely the result of temporary technical faults. They warn that unless the city undertakes a long-term and properly planned expansion of its water distribution network in line with population growth, the shortage could become more severe in the coming years.
The situation in Besa and nearby localities is increasingly being viewed as a warning for rapidly growing cities, where infrastructure development often lags behind urban expansion. Urban planners and citizens stress that essential civic facilities — including water supply, electricity and road connectivity — must be developed simultaneously with residential growth to prevent similar crises in the future.
