After weeks of extreme heat and record-breaking temperatures across Vidarbha, attention is now turning towards the arrival of the Southwest Monsoon. While the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast below-normal rainfall for the country this season, weather experts say monsoon activity could begin across parts of Maharashtra within the next few days.
According to the latest IMD projection, India is expected to receive nearly 90 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA) rainfall during the June-to-September monsoon season. The prediction has raised concerns regarding agriculture, reservoir levels and rural economies that heavily depend on seasonal rainfall.
When Will Monsoon Reach Maharashtra?
The Southwest Monsoon has already advanced over parts of the Andaman Sea and is steadily moving towards the Kerala coast. IMD officials say weather conditions remain favourable for further advancement over southern India and the Arabian Sea.
Meteorologists expect the monsoon to reach Kerala by the end of May or during the first few days of June. If the current progression continues, the monsoon is likely to enter Maharashtra’s Konkan region during the first week of June.
Pre-monsoon showers have already been reported in parts of Konkan, Mumbai and coastal Maharashtra, indicating the gradual seasonal transition.
When Is Monsoon Expected in Vidarbha?
Vidarbha continues to experience severe heatwave conditions, with temperatures crossing 45°C in several districts over the past few days. However, weather experts believe relief may arrive soon.
Historically, the normal onset date of the monsoon in Vidarbha is around June 7, though the actual arrival varies each year depending on atmospheric conditions and monsoon movement.
Meteorologists tracking the system estimate that the region could receive its first major spell of monsoon rain between June 10 and June 15, provided there are no significant disruptions in weather patterns.
Before the official onset, scattered thunderstorms, gusty winds and pre-monsoon showers are expected across Nagpur, Amravati, Wardha, Chandrapur, Gondia and nearby districts.
When Will Monsoon Reach Nagpur?
Nagpur has remained among the hottest cities in the country this summer, with temperatures repeatedly crossing the 45°C mark.
Based on current forecasts and historical trends, the city may witness increased pre-monsoon activity during the first week of June, while the official monsoon arrival is expected between June 10 and June 15.
Experts caution that the progress of the monsoon can still change depending on Arabian Sea conditions, Bay of Bengal weather systems and possible El Niño influences later in the season.
Why Is This Year’s Monsoon Crucial?
This year’s monsoon is being closely monitored for several reasons:
- India is expected to receive below-normal seasonal rainfall
- Vidarbha has witnessed one of its harshest heatwave spells in recent years
- Agriculture across Maharashtra depends heavily on timely June rainfall
- Reservoir storage, drinking water availability and electricity demand are closely linked to monsoon performance
Farmers across Vidarbha, Marathwada and central Maharashtra are now awaiting the first widespread rainfall that could bring relief from the scorching heat and support the upcoming sowing season.
What Residents Can Expect in the Coming Days
Over the next 7 to 10 days:
- Heatwave intensity is likely to gradually decline
- Pre-monsoon thunderstorms may become more frequent
- Humidity levels are expected to rise across Maharashtra
- Cloud cover and isolated rainfall activity may increase
- IMD will continue to closely monitor monsoon advancement
With Nagpur and several parts of Vidarbha reeling under intense summer conditions, the arrival of the monsoon is expected to provide much-needed relief to millions across the region.
