Free uniforms distributed to students in Zilla Parishad schools across Nagpur district are facing quality scrutiny after the state government launched a fresh inspection drive following complaints that substandard polyester fabric was supplied instead of prescribed cotton-blend cloth.
Under the state’s Ganvesh scheme, uniforms are supplied free to students in government and ZP-aided schools. However, complaints of inferior fabric — including polyester content exceeding prescribed 70:30 or 60:40 cotton-blend norms — have triggered skin complaints among girl students and prompted the state to order a statewide audit.
The new inspection formula requires a minimum of 100 schools to be inspected at state level, at least 30 per taluka, with primary education officers conducting direct school visits and fabric samples sent for laboratory testing. In Nagpur district, taluka-level officers have been directed to collect samples and submit compliance reports.
A separate concern flagged is the non-supply of Scout and Guide uniforms. SHG management committees, which handle uniform distribution in several areas, have also raised the alarm over Samagra Shiksha funds not reaching intended beneficiaries.
