An elderly couple was found dead inside their residence in the Dattawadi area under the jurisdiction of Wadi Police Station on Friday, triggering an investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
The deceased have been identified as Gangadhar Janba Bhongade (75) and his wife Kaushalyabai Gangadhar Bhongade (72), residents of HUDA Colony, Dattawadi. The couple had reportedly been living alone in the house for the past 15 years. Gangadhar Bhongade was a retired ammunition factory employee and was receiving a pension after retirement.
According to police, both husband and wife had been suffering from illness for the past few days. Concern arose when relatives and neighbors were unable to contact them for several days. On Friday morning, the couple’s son-in-law arrived to visit them but found the house locked from inside and the main entrance closed.
Suspecting something was wrong, he informed nearby residents and alerted the police. A Wadi Police team rushed to the spot and entered the house after breaking open the door. Inside, Gangadhar Bhongade’s body was found in the kitchen, while Kaushalyabai’s body was discovered in the bedroom.
Preliminary findings suggest that the couple may have died nearly four days before they were found.
Neighbors told police that the couple cared deeply for each other. Kaushalyabai had been unable to get out of bed for several days, and Gangadhar was looking after her daily needs, including meals and household work. Residents also noted that the radio in the house had been playing continuously for several days and newspapers had accumulated in the courtyard, raising suspicion.
Police have sent both bodies for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Authorities are investigating whether the deaths resulted from illness or any other factors. The final cause will be confirmed after the autopsy report is received. Wadi Police have registered the case and further investigation is underway.
