In a major development in the ongoing Don 3 controversy, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) on Wednesday withdrew its non-cooperation directive against actor Ranveer Singh, bringing temporary relief to the Bollywood star amid a growing legal dispute. The decision came a day after Ranveer reportedly served a legal notice on the film body challenging the directive issued over his exit from Farhan Akhtar’s Don 3.
Addressing a press conference in Mumbai, FWICE President BN Tiwari said the federation had decided to revoke the directive following requests from key industry bodies, including the Cine & TV Artistes’ Association (CINTAA), the Indian Motion Picture Producers’ Association (IMPPA) and the Producers Guild of India. According to Tiwari, the stakeholders have been advised to sit together and work towards a solution that protects the interests of both filmmakers and the actor.
FWICE also confirmed that it would respond to Ranveer’s legal notice through appropriate legal channels. The actor’s move to court marked a significant escalation in the dispute, with his legal team reportedly arguing that the federation has no jurisdiction over what they describe as a contractual disagreement between an actor and a production house.
The controversy began after Ranveer’s reported last-minute exit from Don 3, prompting filmmaker Farhan Akhtar’s production team to approach industry bodies over alleged losses incurred during pre-production. Following complaints from the makers, FWICE had issued a non-cooperation directive asking its affiliated members not to work with the actor until the matter was resolved.
The directive had triggered widespread debate within the film industry, with several prominent voices questioning the federation’s authority and the implications of such actions. Veteran producer TP Aggarwal had even approached court against the move, calling for broader consultation among industry bodies before any punitive action was taken.
With the directive now withdrawn, the focus is expected to shift towards negotiations between the concerned parties. However, FWICE’s decision to pursue a legal response indicates that the Don 3 dispute may not be over yet, even as efforts are underway to find an amicable resolution.
