India’s largest airline, IndiGo, on Wednesday suspended all flight operations to and from Kuwait after Kuwaiti authorities temporarily shut the country’s airspace following a major security incident linked to escalating tensions in the Gulf region.
The suspension came hours after Kuwait International Airport halted flight operations as authorities implemented emergency safety measures. Reports indicated that the airport’s Terminal 1 suffered damage during a drone attack amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the United States, prompting Kuwait’s aviation authorities to suspend commercial air traffic and divert flights as a precautionary measure.
In a travel advisory, IndiGo said it had suspended services to and from Kuwait due to the evolving situation and airspace restrictions. The airline urged passengers to check their flight status before travelling and assured customers that it was closely monitoring developments while prioritising the safety of passengers and crew.
The disruption is expected to affect thousands of travellers, including a large number of Indian expatriates living and working in Kuwait. Several flights were either cancelled, delayed or diverted as authorities worked to assess the situation and restore normal operations. Kuwait later indicated that limited flight operations had begun resuming, though restrictions remained in place and the situation continued to evolve.
The latest disruption highlights the growing impact of geopolitical tensions on regional aviation. Airlines across the Middle East and beyond have been forced to alter schedules, reroute aircraft and suspend services in recent months due to security concerns and airspace restrictions linked to the conflict.
Passengers booked on IndiGo flights to or from Kuwait have been advised to stay in touch with the airline for updates regarding cancellations, rescheduling and refund options as authorities continue to monitor the security situation.
