A major cyberattack has targeted the Chandrapur Cancer Care Foundation (Cancer Hospital), with hackers allegedly encrypting the hospital’s entire database and demanding a ransom of nearly Rs 75 lakh in Bitcoin to restore access.
The incident came to light on Friday after the hospital’s IT department detected a technical issue with the main server on June 1 at around 7.30 am. During the investigation, staff discovered a ransomware message displayed on the server, indicating that cybercriminals had gained unauthorised access to the system.
According to hospital sources, the attackers encrypted critical data, including patient records and administrative information, effectively locking the hospital out of its own database.
The ransom note demanded a payment of 1.23456 Bitcoin, valued at approximately Rs 75 lakh, in exchange for a decryption key. The hackers claimed that access to the data would be restored only after the payment was made. They also stated that the compromised information would not be shared with anyone else.
The attack has severely affected the hospital’s information management system, which is used to maintain patient histories, treatment records, and various administrative functions. As a result, routine operations and patient management have reportedly been disrupted.
The incident has raised concerns about cybersecurity in healthcare institutions, with authorities expected to investigate the breach and determine how the attackers gained access to the hospital’s network.
Further details are awaited as the probe continues.
