Despite forecasts of rain, thunderstorms and lightning across Vidarbha, most parts of the region remained dry on Sunday, with temperatures soaring across several districts.
Bramhapuri recorded a blistering 45.2°C, making it the hottest location in the country. The temperature was 4.1 degrees Celsius above normal for this time of year.
Nagpur’s Sonegaon observatory registered a maximum temperature of 43.8°C, placing the city among the hottest locations nationwide. Other major centres in Vidarbha also witnessed intense heat, with Wardha recording 43.5°C, Chandrapur 43.0°C and Akola 42.5°C.
The continued hot spell came despite the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing orange and yellow alerts a day earlier, predicting rain, thunderstorms and lightning across all districts of Vidarbha.
The weather department has now revised its forecast, indicating that Nagpur and several districts in eastern Vidarbha are unlikely to receive substantial rainfall over the next two days. Although isolated showers were reported from a few areas, thunderstorm warnings remain in force under yellow alerts for select districts.
According to meteorological officials, the likelihood of widespread rainfall and thunderstorm activity over Nagpur has now been pushed to June 10 and beyond, extending the wait for relief from the prevailing heatwave-like conditions.
Weather conditions have become increasingly uncomfortable due to a combination of intense daytime heat and rising humidity levels, adding to the discomfort being experienced across the region.
