The Nuisance Detection Squad (NDS) of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has stepped up enforcement of civic cleanliness and sanitation norms across the city, resulting in a sharp rise in penalty collections during May.
According to NMC officials, the squad detected 3,454 violations and recovered ₹48.09 lakh in fines during the month. In comparison, the NDS had penalised 2,501 violators and collected ₹35.02 lakh in April, reflecting an increase of more than ₹13 lakh in fine collections.NDS Chief Virsen Tambe said the squad’s focus is on promoting civic discipline rather than generating revenue.”Our objective is not to collect fines but to discourage repeated violations and encourage citizens to help keep the city clean and free from nuisance,” Tambe said.He informed that against a sanctioned strength of 190 personnel, the squad is currently operating with 136 members.
The staff has been evenly deployed across the city’s 10 zones, with each zone headed by a team leader. Weekly review meetings are conducted at the NDS headquarters to monitor performance and assess enforcement activities.Tambe further said that the role and responsibilities of the NDS have expanded significantly since November 2025, enabling the squad to take broader action against civic violations across Nagpur.
