A dead baby snake was allegedly found inside a packet of nutritional food distributed to a pregnant woman through an Anganwadi centre in Madhya Pradesh’s Pandhurna district, triggering concerns over the quality of food supplied under government welfare schemes.
The incident was reported from Karghat Kamthi village, where Vachhala Bai Dhurve, a pregnant woman, received a packet of laddus under a supplementary nutrition programme. Fortunately, she had not consumed the food. According to her family members, they opened the packet at home and were shocked to discover a dead snakelet inside. They immediately alerted Anganwadi workers and local authorities.
Following the complaint, officials from the Women and Child Development Department, along with police and revenue authorities, reached the village and inspected the packet. The nutritional food packet was seized and a formal report was prepared. Authorities have preserved a sample of the food for laboratory testing to determine how the contamination occurred.
Commenting on the matter, the district collector said a five-member inquiry committee has been constituted to investigate the incident. He added that the food sample has been sent to the State Food Testing Centre in Bhopal for examination. Police officials said further action will be taken after the laboratory report and findings of the inquiry committee are received.
The incident has sparked concern among villagers, particularly pregnant women and families who depend on Anganwadi centres for nutritional supplements. Residents have demanded strict action against those responsible and called for regular quality checks of food distributed through the government programme. Meanwhile, the administration has appealed to the public not to spread rumours and to await the outcome of the official investigation.
