Nagpur Police have arrested two accused in connection with the theft of gold ornaments from a temple and claim to have solved three separate theft cases based on their confessions.
The arrested accused have been identified as Irfan Sheikh and Javed Sheikh. Police have recovered stolen property worth approximately ₹50,000 from their possession.
The case came to light after a mangalsutra was stolen from the idol of Maa Bhavani Devi Temple located near Yashwant Stadium under the jurisdiction of Dhantoli Police Station on June 1.
During the investigation, police examined CCTV footage and traced the suspects. Upon interrogation, the duo allegedly confessed not only to the temple theft but also to two other crimes committed in different parts of the city.
The theft at the temple was captured on CCTV cameras. The footage reportedly shows one of the accused folding his hands and offering prayers before the idol of the goddess.
Moments later, he is seen pulling off the mangalsutra adorning the deity and fleeing with it.
Police further revealed that the accused had earlier stolen a donation box from a Hanuman temple located in an apartment complex under the jurisdiction of Lakadganj Police Station. They also confessed to stealing a two-wheeler from the Tahsil Police Station area.
Further investigation is underway to ascertain whether the accused were involved in any other theft cases in the city
