One of the city’s busiest intersections, Mangalmurti Chowk, has effectively become an open-air drinking spot after dark, with groups of men using the dense trees planted by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation along road dividers as cover to consume alcohol in public, residents have alleged.
The NMC had planted the trees along the dividers as part of a beautification drive. However, locals say the thick foliage now provides drinkers easy concealment from passersby and vehicle traffic. Every evening, groups settle inside the tree cover on the dividers and drink through the night, leaving behind empty liquor bottles, glasses, and garbage, residents said.
The chowk sees heavy daily movement of women, students, and children, making the situation a serious safety concern, according to locals. Residents have questioned why police remain unaware of the recurring menace at such a prominent location, and have demanded increased night patrolling and strict action against those found drinking in public.
