In a major relief for students and parents across Maharashtra, particularly in the Vidarbha region, the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court has directed the state government to reopen schools from June 30 in accordance with the 2023 Government Resolution.
The court set aside the state’s earlier decisions to reopen schools on June 15 and subsequently on June 22, observing that the government must adhere to the academic calendar prescribed under existing regulations.
The order came amid growing concerns over the intense heat prevailing across several parts of Maharashtra. Parents, education activists, and public representatives had opposed the early reopening schedule, arguing that prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures could adversely affect students’ health and well-being.
The issue gained momentum after a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed before the Nagpur Bench, challenging the government’s decision to advance the reopening date despite the prevailing weather conditions in Vidarbha.
With the High Court’s intervention, schools across the state are now expected to commence the new academic session from June 30. The decision is likely to benefit lakhs of students and their families, especially in Vidarbha districts such as Nagpur, Chandrapur, Amravati, Akola, Yavatmal, Gadchiroli, Gondia, and Wardha, where temperatures have remained unusually high in recent weeks.
Parents and students are now awaiting detailed instructions from the School Education Department regarding the implementation of the revised reopening schedule.
During the hearing, the High Court took note of concerns regarding student safety and the impact of severe heatwaves on children. The matter had prompted a review of the state’s academic calendar for the region, leading to the court’s intervention.
The decision is expected to benefit lakhs of students across Vidarbha, including districts such as Nagpur, Amravati, Akola, Chandrapur, Wardha, Bhandara, Gondia, Gadchiroli, Washim, Yavatmal and Buldhana, where summer temperatures often remain among the highest in the country.
Education authorities are expected to issue detailed instructions regarding the revised academic schedule following the court’s order.
