A major power failure at the Navegaon Raw Water Pumping Station on Friday triggered a severe water crisis across Nagpur, affecting nearly 90 per cent of the city’s population. The outage was caused by a sudden technical fault at the Mansar substation of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL).
The disruption has impacted raw water pumping operations, leading to low water pressure and supply interruptions across nine municipal zones from Friday evening. Authorities have warned that if power is not fully restored in time, Saturday morning’s water supply could also be severely affected.
The Navegaon Khairy Dam serves as the sole source of raw water for the Gorewada and Godhani Water Treatment Plants, which supply water through the city’s four major distribution networks — Pench I, II, III and IV. As a result, the unexpected power failure brought raw water pumping operations to a complete halt, disrupting treatment and distribution systems across the city.
Officials from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Orange City Water (OCW) and MSEDCL are working to restore power and resume operations at the earliest. Once electricity supply is restored, pumping activities will restart immediately to stabilise water treatment and distribution networks.
Several consumer areas across the city are expected to face supply disruptions. In the Laxmi Nagar Zone, affected areas include Laxmi Nagar (Old and New), Gayatri Nagar, Pratap Nagar, Khamla, Takli Seem, Jaitala and Trimurti Nagar. In the Dharampeth Zone, Ram Nagar ESR/GSR, Futala Line, Civil Lines, Rifle Line, Seminary Hills, Dabha, Tekdi Wadi, IBM DT, Sitabuldi and Dhantoli are likely to be affected.
Water shortages are also expected in Chinchbhavan, Omkar Nagar, Hudkeshwar, Shri Nagar, Nalanda Nagar and Narsala tapping areas under the Hanuman Nagar Zone, along with Wanjari Nagar, Reshimbagh and Hanuman Nagar in the Dhantoli Zone.
In the Nehru Nagar Zone, residents of Sakkardara, Bidipeth and Balaji Nagar may experience disruptions. Areas such as Sitabuldi Fort, Killa Mahal, Godrej Anandam and the Medical feeder under the Gandhibagh Zone will also be affected. Similarly, Boriyapura, the Central Railway line area and Vahan Thikana in the Satranjipura Zone are expected to face water supply issues.
The disruption will also impact Nara, Nari and Jaripatka in the Ashi Nagar Zone, as well as Gittikhadan, Gorewada, Rajnagar and Sadar in the Mangalwari Zone.
Authorities have appealed to citizens to use water judiciously until normal supply is restored. Residents can obtain updates or seek assistance through the OCW Helpline at 1800-266-9899 or via the Nagpur Jal Grahak Sewa mobile application.
