A major theft was reported aboard the Ajni-Pune Vande Bharat Express after a woman passenger allegedly lost jewellery, cash and important documents worth Rs 20.75 lakh while boarding the train at Ajni Railway Station.
According to the Government Railway Police (GRP), the incident occurred on June 10 when Anjali Ajay Mudhalkar (67), a resident of Pune, boarded Train No. 26102 Vande Bharat Express from Ajni station. She was travelling to Pune and had a reserved seat, No. 29, in Coach C4.
In her complaint, Mudhalkar stated that an unidentified person stole her purse from her bag while she was boarding the train and making her way to her seat. The purse reportedly contained Rs 8,000 in cash, an identity card and valuable jewellery, including gold earrings, a necklace, a gold chain, a diamond pendant and a gold mangalsutra.
The total value of the stolen items has been estimated at Rs 20.75 lakh. The theft was discovered shortly after the train departed from the station.
Railway authorities were immediately informed, prompting a swift response from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police. At Wardha Railway Station, an RPF personnel recorded the preliminary details of the incident and a formal complaint was subsequently registered.
Police have launched an investigation and are examining CCTV footage from Ajni Railway Station and other locations. Officials suspect that the accused may have taken advantage of the rush during boarding to target the passenger.
A case has been registered and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the culprit.
