In a first-of-its-kind initiative for Vidarbha, a gram panchayat in Risod taluka has deployed an Atmospheric Water Generator (AWG) — a machine that extracts moisture from the air and converts it into clean drinking water — ending years of dependence on unsafe water sources for its villagers and school students.
The device, developed by a Hyderabad-based company, works by pulling atmospheric moisture through a series of filters, producing up to 500 litres of purified water daily. The water is further processed through minerals and multiple filtration stages to make it safe for drinking.
The initiative was taken up by the local Zilla Parishad primary school and the gram panchayat, which embraced modern technology to tackle what officials described as a serious, long-standing water quality problem. Residents and students now have access to clean drinking water free of charge. The gram panchayat has taken full responsibility for its operation and maintenance.
The project has drawn attention from across the state as a replicable model for rural water security. Officials noted that the gram panchayat’s willingness to adopt advanced technology serves as an inspiration for other villages in Vidarbha and Maharashtra facing similar drinking water challenges.
