Residents grappling with oppressive humidity and farmers waiting to begin sowing operations are continuing to look towards the skies as the monsoon remains elusive. However, indications suggest that its arrival in the city may be delayed by at least another week.
Meanwhile, cloudy conditions accompanied by lightning and strong winds caused damage in parts of the district on Thursday. Two oxen were killed in Parseoni after being struck during the adverse weather, while a signboard on Ambhora Road was uprooted, disrupting traffic movement for some time.
The overcast skies brought marginal relief from the heat, with Nagpur’s maximum temperature dropping by 1.6 degrees Celsius to 38.4°C. It was the second-lowest maximum temperature recorded in Vidarbha on Thursday, behind Chandrapur, which registered 38.0°C.
Humidity levels remained high, with relative humidity recorded at 48 per cent in the morning and 49 per cent in the evening. Meanwhile, maximum temperatures in Brahmapuri, Gondia, Wardha and Akola touched 40.0°C.
The southwest monsoon has remained stalled near Sangli for nearly a week, significantly reducing the chances of its early advance towards Nagpur.
With no major change in weather conditions expected immediately, both citizens and farmers may have to wait for at least another week before the monsoon reaches the city.
