Activists of the Vidarbha Rajya Andolan Samiti (VRAS) staged a protest in Nagpur on Monday, demanding the creation of a separate Vidarbha state and a comprehensive farm loan waiver for debt-ridden farmers.
The agitation witnessed enthusiastic participation from VRAS members, who raised slogans against the government and sought immediate attention to what they described as long-pending regional and agrarian issues. As the protest intensified, demonstrators briefly disrupted traffic by blocking roads and lying in front of public transport buses as a mark of protest. The agitation led to temporary traffic congestion in the area, affecting the movement of vehicles for some time.
Addressing the gathering, VRAS leaders alleged that successive governments had failed to address the concerns of farmers and the aspirations of the Vidarbha region. They claimed that mounting debt and financial distress continue to push farmers towards extreme measures, including suicides, and urged the government to announce an unconditional and complete farm loan waiver at the earliest.
To prevent further disruption and maintain law and order, police personnel intervened and detained several activists participating in the protest. Traffic movement was later restored in the affected areas. Despite the police action, VRAS leaders reiterated their commitment to the movement and warned that the agitation would be intensified if the government failed to take concrete steps towards granting separate statehood to Vidarbha and addressing the ongoing agrarian crisis.
The organisation maintained that both demands remain crucial for the development of the region and the welfare of its farming community.
