Train delays remain a common challenge for railway passengers across India. While some disruptions are brief, others can stretch for several hours, leaving travellers stranded and inconvenienced. However, many passengers are unaware that Indian Railways has provisions to support them during prolonged delays, including complimentary meals on certain premium trains.
According to IRCTC’s catering policy, passengers travelling on premium trains such as Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express and Duronto Express may be entitled to free meals if their train is delayed beyond a prescribed duration. Depending on the timing and length of the delay, passengers may receive complimentary breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea or snacks.
The refreshments generally include tea or coffee with biscuits, while breakfast and evening snacks may feature bread and butter, fruit juice and hot beverages. Lunch and dinner options can include rice, dal, rajma or chole along with pickle sachets. In some cases, passengers may also be served puris with mixed vegetable curry, accompanied by salt and pepper sachets.
Apart from meal facilities, passengers affected by substantial delays may also be eligible for refunds under certain conditions. If a train is delayed by more than three hours or is diverted significantly from its scheduled route, travellers can choose not to undertake the journey and seek a refund. For tickets booked online, the refund amount is generally credited back to the original payment method, while passengers holding counter tickets must complete the cancellation process at the railway station.
Indian Railways also provides additional assistance during extended delays. Reserved passengers can often access station waiting rooms without extra charges, food stalls may remain open for extended hours, especially during the night, and additional Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel may be deployed at major stations to assist passengers and maintain security.
These measures are aimed at reducing inconvenience and ensuring a more comfortable travel experience for passengers affected by unexpected train delays.
