NMC and HCL Foundation Sign MoU to Strengthen Sports Ecosystem
In a major boost to sports development in the city, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and HCL Foundation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the Khelo Nagpur Excellence Centre, dedicated to training athletes in rugby, fencing and archery.
The MoU was signed on World Olympic Day in the presence of Mayor Nita Thakre. NMC Commissioner Dr. Vipin Itankar signed the agreement on behalf of the civic body, while Dr. Nidhi Pundhir, Senior Vice President (Global CSR) and Director of HCL Foundation, represented the foundation.
The event was attended by Sports Committee Chairperson Darshani Dhawad, Deputy Commissioner Mangesh Khawale, Sports Officer Dr. Piyush Ambulkar, and HCL Foundation representatives Piyush Wankhede and Shubham Nautiyal.
Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Nita Thakre said the initiative would provide aspiring athletes and students across Nagpur with access to high-quality coaching, professional training and modern sports infrastructure. She expressed confidence that the centre would help nurture sporting talent capable of competing at national and international levels, with the potential to represent India at future Olympic Games.
As part of the programme, outstanding sportspersons from NMC schools were felicitated for their achievements. The awardees included Sagar Gaudiya and Madhu Sahu (Kabaddi), Ganesh Gujam (Kho-Kho), Sarvari Phale (Football), Pranay Upay (Athletics), and Gauri Nath (Volleyball).
The Khelo Nagpur Excellence Centre is expected to play a significant role in developing grassroots talent and creating a stronger pathway for young athletes to excel in competitive sports.
