Senior IPS officer Vishwas Nangre Patil is set to officially assume charge as Nagpur Police Commissioner on Monday, ending days of speculation over the delay in his joining. His arrival, however, comes amid a political controversy triggered by a viral video of a speech in which he praised the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and its founder, Dr Keshav Baliram Hedgewar.
Five days have passed since the Maharashtra Home Department appointed Nangre Patil as the new Nagpur Police Commissioner. The transfer order also moved outgoing Commissioner Dr Ravinder Singal to the post of Additional Director General of Police (ADG), Anti-Corruption Bureau. Dr Singal has already bid farewell to the city during a press conference.
As senior officers generally assume charge within a few days of their appointments, the delay in Nangre Patil’s joining had fuelled widespread speculation. Senior police officials, too, refrained from commenting on the matter. Nangre Patil clarified that he was fully prepared to take charge and would arrive in Nagpur on Sunday night before formally assuming office on Monday.Meanwhile, Nagpur Congress city president Prafulla Gudadhe Patil made a controversial statement that further intensified the political atmosphere.
Alleging that the BJP had branded him an “urban Naxal,” he expressed fears that the incoming police commissioner might also label him similarly and even stage an encounter against him.”With Vishwas Nangre Patil coming to Nagpur, we feel insecure,” Gudadhe Patil said, triggering fresh political debate ahead of the new commissioner’s arrival.
