The Nag Vidarbha Chamber of Commerce (NVCC) has urged the district administration to take immediate measures to address the recurring problem of waterlogging and inadequate drainage at Umiya Industrial Estate and nearby areas before the monsoon intensifies.
A delegation led by NVCC President Farooq Akbani and Treasurer Sachin Puniyani submitted a memorandum to Additional CEO Dr Kamalkishore Futane, highlighting the difficulties faced by industries and residents due to encroachments blocking the natural drainage channel passing through Kapsi Khurd village on Bhandara Road.
Akbani said the industrial estate, which employs thousands of people and contributes significantly to government revenue, faces severe flooding every monsoon because of blocked drainage channels. Recalling the heavy rains of 2024, he said floodwaters nearly three feet deep submerged factories, residential colonies and educational institutions, damaging machinery, electrical equipment, goods and important documents, resulting in losses worth crores of rupees.
The Chamber also pointed out that schools such as Adarsh Vidya Mandir and Somalwar High School are located in the affected area. In the absence of a proper stormwater drainage and sewer network, rainwater and sewage accumulate, creating serious public health concerns.
NVCC has demanded the immediate removal of encroachments, desilting of the drainage channel, restoration of water flow to the lake, and development of essential civic infrastructure, including sewer lines, stormwater drains and drinking water facilities.
Dr Futane assured the delegation that the administration would take the necessary steps to address the issue.
