With the management and operations of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport officially transferred from MIHAN India Limited to GMR Aero, the airport operator has unveiled a three-phase redevelopment roadmap aimed at transforming Nagpur into Central India’s premier aviation and logistics hub by 2034.
The ambitious expansion plan focuses on upgrading passenger infrastructure, enhancing airport capacity, strengthening cargo operations and promoting commercial development over the next eight years.
Phase I (Target: 2027)
The first phase will centre on modernising the existing terminal to improve passenger convenience and operational efficiency. Planned upgrades include refurbished terminal facilities, new passenger lounges, expanded retail outlets, self check-in kiosks and self baggage drop systems. The airport’s annual passenger handling capacity is expected to increase to over three million passengers.
Phase II (Target: 2029)
The second phase envisages major infrastructure expansion, including the construction of a new integrated passenger terminal, runway expansion to accommodate higher air traffic, additional aircraft parking bays and upgraded Air Traffic Control (ATC) infrastructure. The phase will also see the development of logistics and commercial zones around the airport, with a long-term vision of scaling passenger handling capacity to 50 million passengers annually.
Phase III (Target: 2034)
The final phase will focus on establishing Nagpur as a leading cargo and logistics hub. Key projects include the development of an international-standard cargo complex, a dedicated cargo terminal and advanced Air Traffic Control systems. Cargo handling capacity is projected to reach 20,000 metric tonnes, while improved connectivity is expected to position Nagpur as the aviation and logistics gateway of Central India.
According to GMR Aero, the redevelopment project is expected to significantly enhance regional air connectivity, attract investments, create employment opportunities and strengthen Nagpur’s position as a key aviation, logistics and commercial destination in the country.
