A major vehicle registration scam has surfaced in the Nagpur Rural Regional Transport Office (RTO), where officials suspect that nearly 1,500 to 2,000 stolen trucks may have been illegally registered over the past few years.
Nagpur Rural Regional Transport Officer Vijaysingh Chavan said the department has written to all major truck manufacturers seeking details of around 8,000 trucks to verify their authenticity and registration records.
According to the complaint filed by the RTO, the accused allegedly exploited registration procedures in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, where physical inspection or verification of trucks was reportedly not mandatory at the time.
Stolen trucks were first registered in those states and later transferred to the Nagpur Rural RTO, enabling them to obtain seemingly legitimate registration records.
Based on the RTO’s complaint, the Kapil Nagar Police Station in Nagpur has registered an FIR and launched an investigation. Authorities are now examining vehicle records and coordinating with manufacturers to identify the suspected stolen trucks and uncover the full extent of the alleged registration racket.
