Three new English-medium schools set to open this academic session through the Municipal Corporation and Akanksha Foundation are yet to actually start functioning.
A week after the academic session began, admissions have still not commenced, leaving parents confused and frustrated.Since 2021, English-medium schools have been started constituency-wise so that municipal school students can access quality English education and compete with private school students. Seven such schools run with Akanksha Foundation’s support have received an enthusiastic response, especially from slum areas and economically weaker families.
Building on this success, a proposal was prepared to start seven more English-medium schools from 2026-27, after surveying closed municipal school buildings for facilities, playgrounds and local need. The Municipal Commissioner had directed the education department to act, with plans for KG-1 and KG-2 classes. However, only three of the seven proposed schools — in Dabha, Basterwari and Dhantoli — were approved to start this year. Despite the session beginning on June 30, admissions haven’t started at any of the three, raising doubts over whether the project will materialize.
Senior officials had directed construction be completed by end-May, but delays by the construction department have stalled classes. The Additional Commissioner did not respond to calls seeking comment. Poor families now face a dilemma: pay extra for private schools or risk the year waiting for municipal ones.
