Renowned Pandavani folk singer and Padma Vibhushan awardee Teejan Bai passed away at the age of 70 after a prolonged illness.
The celebrated folk artist had been battling health problems for several years. She was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) a few months ago after her condition worsened. Reports said she had been suffering from paralysis since 2024 and had difficulty eating solid food in recent months.
Teejan Bai is widely credited with popularising Pandavani, the traditional folk storytelling art based on the Mahabharata. Her powerful performances earned her national and international recognition, making her one of India’s most respected folk artists.
Her journey, however, was marked by hardship. Her decision to perform publicly was opposed by members of her community. After a child marriage, she was ostracised and forced to live independently, often relying on neighbours for food and household utensils while continuing to pursue her passion for folk art.
A major turning point in her career came when renowned theatre personality Habib Tanvir recognised her talent and introduced her performances to a wider audience, paving the way for her rise to national fame.
Teejan Bai’s death marks the end of an era in Indian folk music, leaving behind a rich cultural legacy that inspired generations of artists.
