Heavy rainfall in Mumbai disrupted flight operations on Monday, delaying several flights from Nagpur and affecting both passengers and Maharashtra legislators travelling to the state capital for the ongoing Monsoon Session of the Legislature.
Several flights bound for Mumbai were delayed due to adverse weather conditions, leaving passengers stranded at Nagpur Airport and raising concerns over the timely arrival of MLAs for the day’s Assembly proceedings.
BJP MLA Sameer Meghe said the persistent rainfall in Mumbai had inevitably affected air traffic. “There has been heavy rainfall there for the past 3–4 days; naturally, everyone is affected by this, and all flights are running somewhat behind schedule,” he said.
Asked whether the delays could impact the Assembly session, Meghe said, “Given the situation, with 13 flights diverted while some are cancelled, the Chairman can certainly make a decision if circumstances warrant it. We will have to see the situation at 11:00 AM. The Chairman can defer the proceedings if there is no quorum. I’ve been told flights are running about half an hour late.”
Congress MLA Vikas Thakre said the scheduled 10:00 a.m. Nagpur-Mumbai flight had been rescheduled to 10:40 a.m. due to the rain. “I think the MLAs scheduled to arrive this morning will be delayed.
However, the proceedings of the Assembly will certainly go ahead. Regardless of the attendance, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly has the full authority to conduct the proceedings. I believe the MLAs will reach Mumbai using their own means of transport,” he said.
Heavy rain continued to impact flight operations in Mumbai, causing delays and inconvenience to hundreds of passengers, while airlines advised travellers to check the latest flight status before heading to the airport.
