Commuters, residents and shopkeepers around Hasanbagh Square are facing mounting hardship as the ongoing flyover construction has left the road riddled with potholes, uneven stretches and persistent traffic congestion, making daily travel increasingly difficult.
With the monsoon intensifying, locals fear the deteriorating condition of the road will lead to waterlogging, longer travel times and a greater risk of accidents.
The affected stretch forms part of the Indora-Dighori flyover project being executed by the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (MRIDC). Construction has been underway since 2024, but residents say the absence of timely road restoration has turned the route into a safety hazard.
“The flyover work has been going on for nearly two years. We face difficulties every day because there is no proper traffic diversion plan, while the alternative route remains heavily congested,” said Shubhangi Nerker, a resident of Shesh Nagar. She added that road repairs have remained on hold due to the ongoing construction, leaving damaged stretches unattended for months.
The uneven road surface has emerged as a major concern, especially for two-wheeler riders. Residents say navigating potholes and broken patches has resulted in frequent minor accidents, particularly during peak traffic hours.
“The weekly Monday market was shifted from Hasanbagh Square, but many vendors continue to operate here, creating inconvenience for residents, commuters and nearby businesses,” said Jambhukar, who runs a stationery shop near the square.
An MRIDC official said permanent road restoration can begin only after the flyover construction reaches a stage where the carriageway can be reinstated. Before that, a new sewer pipeline has to be laid as the existing line is heavily clogged. The official added that the currently closed diversion route is expected to reopen within a week after the sewer work is completed.
The official also said the pace of construction has slowed due to the monsoon, prompting Maha Rail to extend the project’s completion deadline to January 2027.
