The Maharashtra Government will make domicile certificates mandatory for obtaining driving licences from August 1, 2026, in a move aimed at streamlining the licensing process, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik informed the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.
He said the proposal outlining the new driving licence rules has been forwarded to the Law and Judiciary Department for approval and will be implemented once the required clearance is received.
Responding to a question raised by MLA Dilip Lande during Question Hour, Sarnaik said the government is also taking action against unauthorised bike taxi services across the state. At the same time, the government is working on a regulatory framework to legalise and regulate bike taxi operations, generate revenue for the state exchequer and create employment opportunities for the youth.
As per the proposed policy, bike taxi operators will have to pay a daily fee of Rs 5 to the government, while an additional Rs 2 from every ride will be contributed to a welfare fund for drivers.
