A 46-year-old man arrested by a Gujarat Police team in a cheque bounce case escaped from custody while the escort team halted at a hotel in central Nagpur. Tehsil Police have registered a case and launched a search to trace the absconding accused.
The accused, identified as Amit Das Bakimdas (46), a resident of Dangarpada near Chandni Post Office in Cuttack, Odisha, allegedly fled when one escorting policeman went to the washroom and another reportedly fell asleep.
According to police, a team from Rajkot City Police, led by Police Sub-Inspector Himmatbhai Jinjala, had travelled to Odisha to execute a non-bailable warrant issued by the Judicial First Class Magistrate (Municipal), Rajkot, in a case registered under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act related to cheque dishonour.
After taking Bakimdas into custody, the Gujarat Police team, comprising PSI Jinjala, Head Constable Jitendrakumar Kalubhai Chavhan and Constable Pradipbhai Aydanbhai Bhangar, was transporting him to Rajkot in a private taxi.
Police said the team stopped at India Sons Hotel near Bhavsar Square on Central Avenue at around 4 pm on July 14 for a short break. The accused was kept in a separate room under police watch.
During the halt, one escorting constable reportedly went to freshen up while the other allegedly dozed off. Taking advantage of the situation, Bakimdas escaped from the room and fled from the hotel.
The Gujarat Police team immediately searched the surrounding area but failed to trace him. Tehsil Police have registered an offence and are continuing efforts to locate the absconding accused.
