The Narendra Nagar Railway Underpass was submerged once again after Tuesday’s rainfall, despite Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) assurances that the location would remain free from waterlogging this monsoon. A Mahindra Thar got stranded in the rising water as the underpass quickly filled up, disrupting traffic and leaving commuters stranded, with videos of the incident soon surfacing on social media.
Ahead of the monsoon, NMC had claimed that engineering upgrades and an improved pumping system would prevent water accumulation at the underpass, presenting the project as a permanent solution to a problem that has plagued the stretch for years. Tuesday’s flooding has undercut that claim, reigniting public concern over the effectiveness of the civic body’s much publicised flood mitigation measures. As of the time of reporting, no official NMC statement had been issued regarding the fresh waterlogging incident.
The underpass has been a recurring flashpoint for years, resurfacing every monsoon despite repeated civic assurances of a permanent fix. The same day, Rana Pratap Nagar Road in Khamla also saw disruption, with incomplete road excavation outside Somalwar School allowing rainwater, mud and debris to flow into the campus compound.
Commuters and residents say the pattern points to a deeper problem: engineering fixes announced before the monsoon are not holding up once the rains actually arrive, leaving the same low-lying stretches vulnerable year after year.
Meanwhile, a Orange Alert remains in force across parts of Maharashtra through July 31, with continuous rain raising the risk of landslides, overflowing rivers and streams, and waterlogging in low-lying areas, prompting authorities to advise caution for travellers. Citizens are demanding NMC deliver lasting solutions instead of temporary measures ahead of further spells forecast this week.
