A flyover at Mansar Chowk on the Nagpur-Jabalpur National Highway (NH-44), inaugurated barely a year ago, has developed a large pothole exposing its iron reinforcement rods, raising serious concerns over construction quality.
The damage was spotted on the night of July 24, at the centre of the flyover in Ramtek taluka, when a section of concrete gave way. Residents immediately alerted National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials, who inspected the site and put up barricades around the damaged stretch to prevent accidents, given the heavy traffic the flyover carries.
NHAI officials said the damaged portion will be completely removed and rebuilt after a detailed engineering inspection determines the exact cause. A technical report on the structure’s overall safety will guide the repair and reconstruction process, they said, adding that traffic would be kept safe in the meantime.
NH-44, India’s longest north-south national highway, carries thousands of heavy and passenger vehicles daily through the Nagpur region, linking several major routes — making any structural flaw a serious safety concern.
Residents have demanded a thorough probe into the incident and strict action against the contractor and officials found responsible, along with public disclosure of the technical inspection report.
