The Maharashtra government has ordered a comprehensive audit of residential housing projects in Nagpur amid allegations that several builders secured Occupancy Certificates (OCs) without completing mandatory civic infrastructure. Pending the verification, the registration of flats across the district has been put on hold.
The decision was announced by Revenue Minister and Nagpur Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule during a special meeting of the District Planning Committee (DPC) held on Monday to review key civic issues.
Taking a serious view of the alleged irregularities, Bawankule instructed officials to identify residential projects that received occupancy clearance despite lacking essential infrastructure. He directed the administration to verify whether developers had fulfilled all mandatory conditions before residents were allowed to occupy the buildings.
The minister also ordered that no new flat registrations be processed until the verification exercise is completed, stating that homebuyers should not suffer because of violations committed by developers.
During the meeting, elected representatives alleged that several high-rise residential projects were occupied without adequate sewerage, drainage, fire safety systems and other basic civic amenities. They claimed the absence of these facilities has placed an additional burden on Nagpur’s existing urban infrastructure and affected the quality of civic services.
The review meeting was attended by Mayor Neeta Thakre, legislators Abhijeet Wanjari, Sudhakar Adbale, Prof. Sanjay Bhende, Dr. Rajiv Potdar, Nitin Raut, Mohan Mate, Krishna Khopde, Pravin Datke and Vikas Thakre, Standing Committee Chairperson Shivani Dani-Wakhare, Nagpur Improvement Trust Chairman Sanjay Meena, Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vipin Itankar, District Collector Kumar Ashirwad, Additional Municipal Commissioner Ankit Muruganantham M, besides senior officials and public representatives.
Bawankule said the administration must ensure strict compliance with building norms and prevent occupancy permissions from being granted unless all mandatory infrastructure requirements have been fully met.
