Inter-City Freedom 2 Walk & Cycle Campaign to begin from January 1

Marathon to be held on Jan 2

As part of Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsava, Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Ltd (NSSCDCL) and Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) have jointly organised Inter-city Freedom 2 Walk and Cycle Campaign for citizens from January 1 to 26, 2022. Nagpur is one of the cities participating in this mega event.

The Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs has given direction to organise this nationwide campaign. It launched Freedom 2 Walk and Cycle City Leaders Campaign and Inter-City Freedom 2 Walk and Cycle Campaign for citizens, as pre-event to the “Smart-Cities Smart Urbanisation”. The conference is slated to be held at Surat tentatively in the first week of February 2022 . Under this challenge, participating citizens will encourage citizens to register their kms cycled from January 1 to 26. The total kms logged by citizens for each city would determine the winner.

This was stated by Buveneswari S, Chief Executive Officer of Nagpur Smart City, while addressing a press conference at the hall in her office on Wednesday. She appealed to the citizens to participate in large numbers before January 1 and monitor their daily walking and cycling activities. Daily experiences will be shared immediately on a ministry-created common communication platform, she pointed out.

E-Governance team of Nagpur Smart City has prepared super-easy step-by-step guide on how to participate in the campaign. For any help they may call on +91758851461. The campaign will culminate by honouring citizens with maximum kms logged and the winning city will be felicitated at Smart Cities – Smart Urbanisation conference, Buveneswari added.

The participating city leaders in the campaign are: Municipal Commissioner Radhakrishnan B, Cycle Mayor of Nagpur Amit Samarth, IPS DCP Zone I Noorul Hassan, Sen ior DCM, IRTS Krishnath Patil and Director NADT Akshay Tapadai IRS.

Buvenswari further said, the 21 km, 10 km and 3 km Marathon has also been organised in collaboration with AIESEC, NMC and Smart City on January 2 in the morning from Nagpur University Ground and end at Law College Square after covering various areas of the city on western side. There will be 13 check points for 21 km Marathon, 7 for 10 km and 2 check points for 3 km with various volunteers. The winners will get cash prizes ranging from Rs 2000/- to Rs 7000/-.

Dr Pranita Umredkar, General Manager, Environment Department and Nodal Officer, pointed out that the city leaders nominated by the Municipal Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Smart City, would participate along with the citizens in cycle and walk campaign  and maintain record.

She pointed out that the organisers would strictly follow government rules for COVID-19 during Marathon, including allowing persons having completed 2 doses of vaccination. On the occasion, Dr Umredkar made a presentation on the topic.
