Nagpur: Once a serene and picturesque neighbourhood near Gandhisagar Lake, the Empress Mill area has fallen into disarray, leaving residents disheartened and desperate for solutions. The locality, known for its tranquillity and natural beauty, is now plagued by urban mismanagement, environmental degradation, and public nuisance.
Noise Pollution and Sleep Deprivation
The peaceful mornings once cherished by residents have been replaced by relentless construction activities, starting as early as 5:30 a.m. “The noise is unbearable. We haven’t had a quiet morning in years,” lamented a long-time resident, citing sleep deprivation as a daily struggle.
Unhygienic Public Spaces
Hastily established labour colonies have turned public spaces into unsanitary zones. Open defecation and bathing are rampant, creating a stench that permeates the area. “We can’t step out without covering our noses,” said a local homemaker, describing the worsening hygiene conditions.
Rise in Drug Abuse
Adding to the residents’ woes, the area has become a hotspot for drug abuse. Groups of teenagers and young adults openly consume substances on the streets, raising concerns about safety. “Our children are not safe here anymore,” said a worried parent.
Environmental Degradation
The once-green locality, home to migratory birds and lush vegetation, has been reduced to a barren landscape covered in dust and debris from unchecked construction. “We used to see flocks of migratory birds near the lake. Now, all we see is polluted water and rubble,” said a retired teacher, mourning the loss of natural beauty.
Residents’ Appeals Go Unanswered
Despite repeated complaints to the municipal corporation, no concrete action has been taken. “We’ve approached the authorities multiple times, but our pleas have been ignored,” said a local leader of the residents’ association.
Recommendations for Revival
Residents have outlined key measures to address the crisis:
- Regulated Construction Activities: Enforcing time restrictions to curb early-morning disturbances.
- Improved Sanitation: Providing adequate toilet and bathing facilities for labourers to eliminate open defecation.
- Enhanced Security: Increasing police patrols to curb drug abuse and ensure public safety.
- Environmental Restoration: Launching tree plantation drives and cleaning initiatives to restore the area’s natural habitat.
The Empress Mill area’s residents are calling for immediate action to reclaim their neighbourhood from the grip of urban decay. Their hopes rest on collective efforts to restore the harmony and beauty that once defined this historic locale.
