Nagpur: A late-night mishap on the Samruddhi Mahamarg (Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway) on Sunday left passengers stranded as 13 vehicles experienced sudden tyre punctures due to a heavy iron plate falling onto the road.
The incident occurred at 8:28 PM near chainage number 223 on the Nagpur corridor. Reports of multiple punctures prompted the Samruddhi Mahamarg control room to alert state highway police, who swiftly arrived at the scene.
Upon investigation, it was found that the sharp-edged iron plate had fallen from a trailer with registration number NL 01 AE 7143, puncturing tyres of cars passing over it at high speed.
Swift Response by Authorities
Anil Kumar Gaikwad, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), which manages the expressway, confirmed the incident. Highway police diverted the affected vehicles to the roadside, ensuring passenger safety, and provided water to those stranded.
The MSRDC team contacted Malegaon officials for assistance. However, the iron plate’s heavy weight required a hydraulic crane, which was brought from the Malegaon toll booth to remove it.
Tensions Among Vehicle Owners
Frustrated car owners, angered by the damage and delay, reportedly attempted to set the trailer on fire. The police intervened, diffusing the situation and advising affected parties to file formal complaints at the local police station.
Road Cleared After Midnight
The trailer was taken into custody for further investigation, and operations concluded by 2:00 AM on Monday. Traffic resumed shortly thereafter, with the MSRDC ensuring the road was cleared and safe for travel.
