The historic Gandhisagar Lake, a 275-year-old gem of Nagpur, is poised for a grand transformation with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) unveiling plans for a state-of-the-art fountain and a modern auditorium on its banks. As part of the Central Government’s AMRUT 2.0 initiative, this project aims to restore and enhance the lake’s historic and cultural significance while balancing modern amenities with its ecological heritage.
Originally constructed during the reign of Chand Sultan of the Gond Dynasty to supply drinking water to old Nagpur city, Gandhisagar Lake has seen several transitions, from being known as Jumma Talao to Shukrawari Lake. Now, NMC’s new project seeks to add another chapter to its legacy by merging tradition with innovation.
Executive Engineer Anil Gedam confirmed that redevelopment work, including constructing a retaining wall to protect the lake’s perimeter, is well underway. With about one-third of the wall completed, efforts are accelerating near the Raman Science Centre to ensure comprehensive restoration.
The fountain project, still in its early stages, promises to become a visual and cultural landmark for the city. Rajendra Rathod, Executive Engineer of NMC’s Electrical Department, shared that a consultant has been appointed to design the fountain. The civic body is taking a cautious approach, drawing lessons from the Futala Lake musical fountain project to ensure success.
Adding to the allure of the site, NMC plans to replace the aging Bal Bhavan with a modern auditorium, making Gandhisagar a hub for community and cultural activities. Officials are working on formalities, including Town Planning approvals, and are optimistic about creating a sustainable and impactful project.
While challenges remain, the initiative reflects NMC’s commitment to revitalize Gandhisagar Lake, honoring its historical roots while preparing it for a vibrant future.
