The city has witnessed a concerning rise in serious crimes such as murders, rapes, and burglaries, even as the overall crime increase remains marginal. In 2024, the city registered 10,074 cases under Part 1 crimes, which include murders, attempted murders, robberies, dacoity, extortion, rapes, and assaults, compared to 9,999 cases in 2023—a rise of just 75 cases.
However, specific categories showed notable surges, with murders increasing by 10 cases, attempted murders by 71, rapes by 34, and assaults by 185. At the same time, incidents of dacoity, robbery, chain-snatching, and extortion saw a decline. A decrease in dacoity preparation cases, where suspects are apprehended with weapons before committing a crime, has raised concerns as such actions are crucial for deterring criminals.
Property crimes like burglaries and vehicle thefts have also escalated, with burglaries rising from 732 cases in 2022 to 1,013 in 2024, and vehicle thefts increasing from 1,553 cases in 2022 to 1,947 in 2024. These crimes significantly impact citizens’ sense of security, as hard-earned valuables and vehicles are often stolen overnight.
Despite these challenges, the Nagpur Police achieved a detection rate of 66% in 2024, up from 61% in 2023, reflecting a 5% improvement. Experts emphasize the need for enhanced patrolling to address both violent and property crimes effectively. While the improved detection rate is a positive sign, the growing number of serious offenses and thefts highlights the urgent need for strengthened preventive measures to maintain law and order in the city.
