The skies might have been cleared of colorful kites after Makar Sankranti, but the aftermath of the festivities continues to take a toll on the city’s birds. On Wednesday morning, a distressed pigeon was spotted trapped in nylon manja (kite-flying thread) on an electric wire in Laxmi Nagar, sparking a heartwarming rescue operation by the fire brigade.
The bird was seen dangling precariously, struggling to free itself. Alert residents promptly informed the fire brigade, which responded swiftly. Equipped with specialized tools, the rescue team carefully disentangled the pigeon from the hazardous thread and ensured its safety.

This incident highlights the increasing dangers posed by nylon manja. Although the festival is over, birds continue to suffer from injuries caused by this deadly thread. Many cases go unnoticed, leading to fatalities among wildlife. Fortunately, this pigeon received immediate help due to its visibility in the city.
The ‘Nylon Manja’ has caused serious harm, with several deaths reported this year. Although the government has banned its sale and authorities have taken action against vendors selling it, the dangerous thread can still be found in some areas.

Incidents like this highlight the urgent need to switch to eco-friendly kite strings. Wildlife experts and authorities are actively promoting safer alternatives to prevent such tragedies and protect both urban wildlife and people.
