In a significant crackdown on illegal online betting, the Nagpur Crime Branch arrested three individuals for allegedly accepting bets on the Afghanistan vs. Australia Champions Trophy One-Day Cricket Match. The operation was conducted in the Ambazari area on February 28 following a tip-off.
Acting on the information, police raided Himsagar Apartment in Ambazari, where they caught the accused red-handed engaging in online betting. The arrested individuals have been identified as Pramod Bhaurao Dongre (51) – Resident of Bajrang Nagar, Nagpur. Sandeep Narayan Devgade (35) – Resident of Chikhalgaon, Yavatmal and Amjad Khan Sheikh Ramzan (40) – Resident of Itwari, Shantinagar, Nagpur
During questioning, the accused disclosed that they were operating under the direction of an absconding suspect identified as Jaiswal from Yavatmal.
Police seized two laptops, a smart TV, a multimedia line, and eight mobile phones—with an estimated total value of ₹2.17 lakh.
A case has been registered at Ambazari Police Station under Sections 4 and 5 of the Maharashtra Prevention of Gambling Act. The arrested individuals, along with the seized materials, have been handed over to the Ambazari police for further investigation.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of Commissioner of Police Ravinder Kumar Singal, Joint CP Nisar Tamboli, Additional CP (Crime) Sanjay Patil, DCP (Detection) Rahul Maknikar, and ACP (Crime Branch) Abhijit Patil. The raid was executed by PI Shubhangi Deshmukh, PSI Gajanan Chambhare, and a team of crime branch officials.
