A male tiger, aged around 3 to 3.5 years, was found poached in the Bhangaala Nala area of Sironji, under the Khapa Forest Range here, on Friday, March 14. The carcass was discovered by locals, who alerted forest officials. Upon inspection, officials found the tiger’s paws, whiskers, and teeth missing, indicating a case of poaching.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the poachers had set up an electric trap using an 11kV power line, along with iron wires and bamboo stakes, to kill the tiger. The Pench Tiger Reserve’s dog squad was deployed to assist in the probe.
A team of veterinary experts conducted a post-mortem as per National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) guidelines, and viscera samples were collected for forensic analysis. Authorities have launched a thorough investigation to identify the culprits, examining past wildlife crime records and evidence found at the scene.
The case is being probed under the supervision of senior forest officials, including Deputy Conservator of Forests Dr. Bharat Singh Hada. Local police are also assisting in the investigation, with officers from Khapa Police Station and Nagpur Rural Division present at the site.
Efforts are underway to trace the poachers and prevent further wildlife crimes in the region.
