A minor altercation took a deadly turn in Rahul Nagar, under Dhantoli police station, when a 19-year-old BSc student fatally stabbed a 35-year-old scrap worker on Sunday night, March 16.
The deceased has been identified as Ankush Devgirikar (35), who worked at a local scrap shop. The accused, Ayush Mandape (19), a BSc student, lived in the same neighborhood.
According to police, the two were intoxicated when an argument broke out between them. During the dispute, Devgirikar grabbed Mandape by the collar, which enraged him. In a fit of anger, Mandape retrieved a kitchen knife from his house and stabbed Devgirikar around 11 PM.
Mandape fled the scene, leaving Devgirikar critically injured. Locals alerted the Dhantoli police, who later apprehended the accused on charges of attempted murder. Meanwhile, Devgirikar was rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where he succumbed to his injuries on Monday morning, March 17.
Following his death, police upgraded the charges to murder, and Mandape was formally placed under arrest. Further investigation is underway.
