Nagpur Police have identified Faheem Khan (38) as the mastermind behind the recent riots over demands to relocate Aurangzeb’s tomb from Maharashtra. Police have stated in the FIR that Khan mobilized a mob and incited violence. He has been arrested and booked under multiple charges on Wednesday.
Khan, a resident of Sanjay Bagh in Yashodhara Nagar, is the city president of the Minority Democratic Party. He had contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections against BJP leader and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari but lost by 6.5 lakh votes.
The violence broke out on Monday night after a VHP and Bajrang Dal protest near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s statue in Mahal. Following rumors, a mob attacked Hansapuri, pelting stones and vandalizing property. The clashes lasted until midnight, creating panic in the city.
So far, police have registered six cases against 1,200 people, with fewer than 200 individuals named. Investigations are ongoing to determine if an organization was involved.
A curfew remains in place across 11 police station areas, and Section 163 restrictions continue. Authorities urge residents to stay calm and avoid rumors.
