In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the Crime Branch Unit 1 of Nagpur Police apprehended three individuals, including two from Mumbai, for possession of a large quantity of MD (Mephedrone) worth over ?31 lakh. The operation was carried out under the NDPS Act following a tip-off about an interstate drug deal.
The raid took place at Hotel Shri Kanhaiya in Hanuman Galli, Sitabuldi, between 8:20 pm and 11:30 pm on Saturday. Acting on confidential information, the Crime Branch team laid a trap after receiving inputs that drug peddlers from Mumbai were arriving in Nagpur to distribute a significant quantity of MD. During the raid, the police seized 618 grams of MD powder valued at ?31,05,000. Along with the narcotics, four mobile phones worth ?40,000, a two-wheeler moped worth ?1,00,000, ?2,000 in cash, and an electronic weighing machine valued at ?1,000 were also recovered. The total value of the seized items amounts to ?32,48,000.
The arrested accused have been identified as Wasim Khan (37) and Fakhruddin alias Khilli Qureshi (26), both residents of Bainganwadi in Govandi East, Mumbai, and Abdul Wasim Shaikh (34), a resident of Hansapuri, near Wadia Hospital, in Nagpur. According to police sources, the first two accused had travelled from Mumbai to sell the MD in Nagpur, while the third was found accompanying them during the raid.
A case has been registered under Sections 8(c), 22(b), and 29 of the NDPS Act. Further investigation is underway to determine the source of the drugs and to identify the potential recipients in Nagpur. Police suspect a wider network and said that more arrests may follow.
