In a bid to strengthen last-mile and first-mile connectivity for metro commuters, Maha Metro has extended its ‘Shared Auto-Rickshaw Service’ to three additional metro stations in the city—Indora Square, Gaddigodam Square, and Zero Mile Freedom Park Square, according to a press release issued by the agency.
With this latest expansion, the shared rickshaw service is now operational at 24 Nagpur Metro stations, marking another step towards improving commuter convenience and promoting eco-friendly travel options.
The initiative was officially launched at Indora Square Metro Station, where Maha Metro officials flagged off the new service. The shared rickshaws aim to offer passengers a seamless and affordable journey from home to their final destination, bridging the crucial connectivity gap beyond metro stations.
Maha Metro stated that stations where the shared rickshaw service was previously introduced recorded an 8–10% rise in daily ridership in the first few months of operation. The data suggests that feeder services are playing a vital role in attracting more passengers to the metro network.
Commuters have welcomed the move, especially those who previously had to walk long distances after deboarding. A local college student shared, “I used to walk nearly 650 meters from Gaddigodam Metro Station to my college. With shared rickshaws now available outside the station, I’ll save a lot of time.”
The metro system has witnessed a steady increase in daily ridership over the past year, with average weekday passenger numbers reaching 1,04,346 last week, up from a daily average of 99,448, according to Maha Metro.
As part of its ongoing commitment to integrated urban mobility, Maha Metro plans to introduce shared mobility services at the remaining metro stations later this year, reinforcing Nagpur’s image as a model city for sustainable and connected transportation.
