Despite repeated pleas by railway employees over the years, the dangerously dilapidated condition of railway colonies continues to be ignored by the administration. In yet another alarming incident, a portion of the kitchen wall suddenly collapsed today at Quarter No. 350/L (RB-2) in the Ajni Railway Colony.
The quarter is occupied by Head TTE Mr. Mukesh Kumar. Around 11:30 AM, while his wife was cooking in the kitchen, a section of the wall came crashing down directly on her arm and shoulder, leaving her with serious injuries. Thankfully, the wall missed her head, preventing what could have been a fatal accident.
Shockingly, this is not the first such mishap in the same quarter. In September 2023, another TTE, Mr. Sujit Sinha, narrowly escaped injury when the kitchen slab collapsed. At that time, the Railways had temporarily relocated him and declared the quarter “unsafe” through an IOW report. However, disregarding this warning, another employee was later assigned the same quarter — a decision that has now resulted in fresh trauma.
This incident comes barely a day after another accident in the colony, where a part of the ceiling at TTE Niranjan Pandey’s residence (Quarter 406/B) fell, putting his entire family at risk. The recurring failures have laid bare the hollow claims of the Railways regarding the safety of staff accommodations.
Railway staff have long demanded structural audits and urgent repairs of residential quarters. Ajni Railway Colony, in particular, has seen severe deterioration over time — from sagging roofs and crumbling walls to constant leakage and dampness in kitchens and bathrooms. The employees feel their concerns are being systematically neglected, putting their lives and families at grave risk.
