In a firm move to curb illegal alcohol consumption at eateries, Zone 1 Police led by Deputy Commissioner of Police S Rushikesh Reddy, have ordered the temporary closure of Baba Saoji Restaurant, located at Hingna T-Point, under Pratap Nagar Police Station limits. The restaurant has been sealed for five days, starting July 31, 2025, under Section 142(2) of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act.
The action follows repeated violations of the law despite multiple warnings and previous cases registered against the establishment. Police records reveal that Baba Saoji Restaurant had three FIRs registered under Section 68 of the Prohibition Act — Cr No. 255/2024 (June 21), 1393/2024 (September 1), and 413/2024 (July 30) — all involving illegal alcohol consumption on the premises. While two cases are currently pending in court, the third is under investigation.
According to the police, the restaurant, operated by Vijay Laxman Paunikar, was routinely found providing space and materials for customers to consume liquor, in blatant disregard of prior enforcement actions. Several local social organisations had also submitted complaints to senior officers, raising concerns over the establishment’s ongoing illegal activities.
With upcoming festivals and public events, police feared the continuation of such practices could lead to law and order disturbances. Acting on these concerns, DCP S Rushikesh Reddy issued the closure order, following directions from the Commissioner of Police, Joint Commissioner, and Additional Commissioner (South Region) of Nagpur.
Earlier this year, similar action was taken against Hotel Bakasur and Apna Dhaba NH01, both shut down for 15 days under Bajaj Nagar Police limits.
